She wanted her life to change ... he wanted his to stay the same.

Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn Lanski is tired of her boring, single life. Swimming and spending time with Tatiana, her best friend, are her only sanctuary. The girls plan to leave their drab lakeside town far behind for college, and Ash hopes to finally ditch her longtime crush for Finley, Tatiana's twin brother. But when Tatiana and her family fail to return home after a family emergency, Ashlyn makes an irrational decision to deal with her loss of them.

Finley Helton and his family are good at blending in with humans as they run their sailing charter business in Lake Tahoe. The truth is they guard an ancient secret. When a not so routine meeting forces Finley, Tatiana and their mother to return to their underwater home of Natatoria, they learn Fin's father will lead a dangerous mission. They must stay in Natatoria and wait for his return, but Fin can't stay caged up for long.

Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, and a simple lifesaving kiss will change their lives forever.

Everblue Mer Tales Book 1 eBook Brenda Pandos

First off, this book was painfully slow and the synopsis is misleading. I’m guessing that “he”, is Fin, but he actually does want his life to change. Ashlyn, the heroine, is the one who cries at the thought of her life changing. The first half of the book was alternating chapters that had very little to do with the plot and were mind-numbing. For the most part, it was about Ashlyn’s upcoming swim meet and prom. There was also a painful love square. A square. Is that even legal? The book dragged on and on and there is absolutely no need for this to be a series.

The characters were painful, Ashlyn’s mother is a woman who does her best to make Ash feel terrible about herself, although it’s “balanced out” by her every now and then warm gestures. Her Dad, although supposed to be rarely around because he’s a fireman, is around very often, but does little to help the situation between Ash and her Mom. Instead he insists that she “talk to her” about it and leaves it at that, rather than either speaking to her Mom about it or having her Mom sit with them. Her sister was only there to bother Ashlyn for no reason and her grandparents were just there to move the plot along.Anyone besides Ashlyn and Fin, were just pawns for the author to use to nudge the plot along. Ashlyn herself has very little character, complaining about prom and her upcoming swim meet. While I understand her apprehension towards the meet she has coming up, I just don’t see why those two things had to be such a large part of the book. It just filled it with fluff that I couldn’t care less about. A lot of times I skipped her side of the book and read Fin’s because his was a lot more interesting, and I didn’t miss a thing.

The one true soul mate thing bothered me. The whole concept is that if a merperson kisses a) a mermaid/merman, they both love each other completely or b) a human, the merman/maid loves the human completely, and the human feels a weird need to be around them forever. What happens with accidental kissing? Those times when you turn your head and they turn theirs and suddenly whoops! Was that your lips? Anyone will ill intentions could easily cause someone to fall in love with them against their will.

I didn’t really see any actual chemistry between Fin and Ashlynn, I’m not sure why they even like each other. They just seemed to be totally infatuated with each other, ready to move across the world for each other, but I just didn’t know why. What is so great about Ashlyn? She doesn’t do anything and she makes poor decisions that endangers her life and others. Fin, I could sort of see why Ashlyn liked him. He’s sweet and caring, a bit naive, and from the descriptions I gathered, good-looking too. I still didn’t see enough interaction between them as to why they fell in love.

Religion was mixed into the story as well, almost all the characters would say “Thank God” or “gift that God had given him/her” or “Would you like to pray?”. The only issue I had with that was it was ill-placed, as if having religion in the story was an after-thought and sloppily placed in to push it at the reader.
I was hoping for an interesting tale about mermaids and an interesting heroine with gorgeous red hair to match the cover, but instead I got a rather bland book about an indecisive boring teenager who had major issues with facing her problems and had a crush on her best friend’s brother, insta-love, suspense-less scenes, one-dimensional characters, lies until she feels really guilty, overly coincidental events, less than ideal reactions to certain situations, and a poorly pieced together cliffhanger.

Everblue Mer Tales Book 1 eBook Brenda Pandos Reviews

Ashlyn Fances Lanski is a seventeen year old attending high school in Tahoe, living on the edge of the lake and the captain of the swim team. She loves to swim and has receives an offer from a University in Florida for a full-ride scholarship. With only months left of her senior year, Ash dreams of going away to college, but she doesn't plan on going alone. Her best friend, Tatiana, also lives on the shores of Lake Tahoe. They've been neighbors for years and share as much as they can together, including their dream to escape their hometown and small family tourist businesses to a greater world. Tatiana is sheltered (to say the least) and her parents are very protective of her, she's got an unbreakable sundown curfew that she is never allowed to miss, a rule of now sleepovers at her house or others, and an insatiable desire to hear all about the high school drama going on in Ash's life (or just going on around the high school). Ash also enjoys having Tatiana as a neighbor because it means she still gets to see or spend time with Fin, Tatiana's twin brother with his amazing body, attractively perfect blue eyes, and wonderful voice. Tataiana and Ash's secret plans for college and their dreams of freedom for their families looms ever closer and Tatiana's excitement (as well as daily countdown) continue to mount.
Tatiana, on the other hand, loves Ash as her best friend and thrives on any information and socializing that she can get out of her. Her family has long-standing traditions that she can't break, though she'd love to escape. Her curfew is a bother and she's grown to love her shore-based life, compared to what she knows a lot of others endure. Her daily countdown is the countdown to her new life, freedom, and hopefully a much less pressured future where she has the freedom to date, love, stay up late, and even get an education. Unknown to her best friend, when the sunsets, she leads a completely different life with her family (and many others) than the one she leads on shore. Her biggest regret will be leaving behind her twin brother, Finely.
Fin loves the life he's living, even if it is a little bit of a double life. By day he helps his father and mother run their tourist charter boats, taking people on tours of the lake and sharing the myths and lore about Tahoe's own Nessie, or Loch Ness Monster. Under the guise of being home-schooled as well, he is able to continue his life on land without a hitch. His twin sister, though amazing and the person he shares a very special bond with, tends to push against the rules and boundaries that their parents have set for them. She keeps drawing closer and closer to their neighbor, Ash. Someone that Fin himself finds hard to pull away from. She's young, beautiful, has fiery red hair, and an amazing and unconquerable spirit. Her curls drive him mad and he has to constantly restrain himself from saying the wrong things at the wrong time as well as keep his distance, his father has made it very clear that they shouldn't be making any deep connections or relationships in Tahoe. But her can't help it and Tatiana craves her time with Ask as much as he does. Unfortunately, Ash isn't aware of how much of a family secret they are protecting and hiding from her.
As life continues on, Tatiana, Fin and their family are summoned to a meeting, leaving Ash alone and without a explanation of where they were going or what was happening. Ash worries incessantly about her best friend and her uber-hot twin, dreading what has happened to them and upset that they haven't even tried to contact her once sine their disappearance. Her life is being turned completely upside-down. As school, the star baseball player Callahan has broken up with his girl friend, Ash has been nominated for Homecoming Queen, and Callahan called to ask her to come as his date! Ash has no idea what to do and even though she really wished that Fin would be the one to take her to a dance, Ash is in no position to say no to the most attractive and wanted guy on campus. All this drama and her best friend isn't even there for her to vent to, and oh how Tatiana would love to hear all of the juicy details. Meanwhile, her best friend is trapped in a world that Ash doesn't even know exists, the world where siren screams make mermen double over, precious jewels glitter everywhere, and a single kiss is a binding promise that lasts a lifetime.
Join the shoreline and underwater adventure that takes you through portals to another world, the world of Natatoria, the mer-capitol and supposed safe haven. See what happens to the three seventeen-year-olds and their adventures as they try to find their place, their path to the future, and discover what they really want. Will Ask end up the Homecoming Queen? Is Callahan the boy of her dreams that she's never dreamed of? Will Tatiana be able to get back to Ash and the secret college adventure they've been counting down to for months? Will Fin be able to stay with his twin sister and finally admit his feelings to Ash?
Overall a good book that takes time to explain some of the details on Lake Tahoe, even incorporating the push of keeping Lake Tahoe blue and clean, the tourist traps, and Nessie. Definitely a good read for young adult females, especially if they are interested in fantasy-romance novels.
