While I'm not the biggest short story fan, this one was definitely very entertaining. All the stories kind of reference each other or have similar characters and they all seem to inhabit the same town. You know, there is plenty of sick crap in this book,BUT, you keep reading because there is plenty of humor in this book as well. That is if you have a seriously twisted sense of humor,and I don't think you'd be reading reviews of this if you already didn't have some sense of what it is about. The hype is real, the warnings are real, believe me this is gross, shocking, perverted, and all that, however, the stories are good too. And that's what sets this apart from other collections... the stories are good. You're not sludging through the dumbest crap just to read some shocking scenarios. Good book, GREAT imagination!!!
The graphic cover and title hint at a book of horrific and depraved stories, which is why I got it. A little light reading is always nice. But, hidden away in the depraved tales is an unexpected depth. Elegant, horrific prose assault the reader with graphic stories that disturb and disgust. A perfect paradox. An unexpected delight. You will hate yourself for loving it. I must wash away the unclean feeling it has left me with.
Genital Grinder is an EXTREMELY, OUTRAGEOUS, SICK and TWISTED collection of short stories, but it's more than that. The book read almost like a novel, with most of the stories telling the tale of Greg and Von and their crazy-ass adventures. When I wasn't ready to vomit, I was cracking up. Literally, laughing out loud. But this collection isn't all about grossing you out (although that is a large part of it) because there is an entertaining story to follow, as each long-short (some novella length) continues the characters adventures. And the writing is superb. This isnt just gross out crap thrown down on a page, it's written really well and if you look beyond the craziness, there is a really good and fun story to follow.
Not all the tales are over the top nasty, there are a few that are "normal horror" if you will, but be prepared for the nastiest shit you've ever read.
Harding writes a nicely detailed, gross-enough tale in the vein of Edward Lee. But unlike Lee, he leaves me hanging, waiting for "something" else to happen. I can't put my finger on it, but it's as if he brought me to the edge, showed me the possibilities, then pulled back. His details are clear and colorful, and the characters are (ahem) fleshed out enough so you can follow them, but the effects of their carnage drift off and seem to be left behind. The follow-through with the victims seems to be the low point. With Edward Lee I feel a complete circle of the horror being inflicted by the antagonist, but also the pain and distress being felt by the victim, which helps make the victim more sympathetic.
Overall it was fun, but I'll think twice about reading another. I'll stick with Lee.
I'm rating this book on its disgust factor!
This book is not scary, it is however disgusting as can be!! If I could give it 10 stars for gore and over the top disgust I would. It's like the purpose of these stories is to make a person puke. The stories start mild and humorous then you plunged deep into sick, bile raising nastiness and I'm not even half way through the book. I had to stop and take a breather because its that bad, in fact, this writer should probably seek therapy because he could use it.
Don't get me wrong, I love horror and gore stories, but this one takes the cake. It's the worst I've read so far.
I'm going to finish the book, but I just needed a break from the thoughts of "Ugh" and covering my mouth.
Finally finished this book. N-a-s-t-y but funny. Some of the stories, especially the one's with Von and Greg, are downright hilarious.
Still think this writer is demented though.
I feel like I want to give the first half of the book four stars, and the second half two. I can't say I've ever been quite so divided on a rating. I suppose the fair thing is to settle in the middle.
The first half is brilliant, disturbing and completely depraved. The stories tie together in unique and fun ways. The second half while disturbing at times, felt a bit unfocused. Almost like an idea not quite fully flushed out yet.
In "Emissary," a boy watches films similar to the Faces of Death videos from the 70s and 80s. That's where this book really picked up for me. If you're looking for dark humor and a gross-out read that will contort your facial features into continual cringes, check out Genital Grinder. The title says it all.
I like books that push the boundaries of what is acceptable and decent; I like prose that makes my skin crawl. This is not for everybody.
