Meet Tallulah. Gifted. Magical. Cursed.

When the world fears you, being Gifted is a curse.

In the cornerstone of the rural south, Brooklyn, Mississippi, no one dares make eye contact with the strange Caibre family. Until the rewards are worth the cost. The townsfolk come, cash in hand, always at night, to pay for services only a Gifted can provide.

No matter the Gifts prevalent in her family, at twenty-one, Tallulah is expected to follow the path laid out for her marriage, babies, and helping her mama teach the family home school program. She’s resigned to live the quiet life and stay out of trouble…until she meets Logan.

An outsider and all around rebel, Logan doesn’t care about her family’s reputation. Yet after a tragic loss wreaks havoc on the crumbling relationship between the Caibres and the townsfolk, Tallulah must decide if love and freedom are worth risking everything.

“Fans of Sookie Stackhouse and Beautiful Creatures who are looking for their next fix from the sticks should look no further than BLACKBIRD SUMMER. I can't wait for the next book in the series.” - Book Reviewer, KChase ★★★★

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q Why do you write?

A I write for lots of reasons To make sense of emotions. For fun. To stave away boredom. To share a piece of myself with others. To prove that I can. But mostly, because there is a thrill in typing The End that is unlike any other.

Q What books do you write?

A I write across different genres, but there is a common theme of sisterhood with currents of magic that is dark around the edges. All of my writing has a Southern Gothic flavor—no matter if it is romance or women’s fiction or contemporary fantasy. I also love creating complicated relationships. Sometimes it is between lovers. Sometimes it is between family members. Sometimes between friends.

BLACKBIRD SUMMER

  1. THE CHANS (short story)
  2. FORGET ME NOT (novella)
  3. BLACKBIRD SUMMER (book 1)

Blackbird Summer edition by Em Shotwell Paranormal Romance eBooks

A frightening, exciting and heart-warming novel! I stayed up far too late reading Blackbird Summer, but I'm not at all sorry. I was completely impressed by this book. The plot was excellent and it built the tension steadily throughout the novel. The character development was surprisingly good, with characters that were both believable and interesting. I really enjoyed getting to know them. Developing believable characters is an impressive feat when you understand that some had "gifts" that stretched into the realm of the paranormal. I enjoyed getting to know them and feel that small sense of loss that comes when you finish a really good book and have to leave them behind. The writing was engaging, the language was clean and I only noticed a few insignificant typos. That was refreshing! I highly recommend Blackbird Summer -- as long as you don't mind staying up much too late to finish it!

Blackbird Summer edition by Em Shotwell Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I read the short story, The Chans, before reading Blackbird Summer, which is the reason I was so anxious to read this novel. From the very beginning I loved the writing, descriptions and characters in this novel. The Southern Charm appeal was very fun for me. But this isn't sunshine and butterflies throughout. It becomes deep and dark with suspense that thickens and seasons the stew of this story quite well. I laughed and, as other reviewers have mentioned, I cried. I cared about the characters and couldn't wait to read again, when life required that I put the book down. This is a story that is so worth reading and enjoying from beginning to end. I look forward to Ms. Shotwell's next installment in this series.
I am a discriminating reader with an English degree and a few years of teaching high school literature under my belt. I have always told my students that life is too short to read bad books, and I will often stop reading a novel if the first few chapters don't suck me in. I don't give glowing reviews lightly, but I gladly offer praise for Blackbird Summer.

What a page turner! This is a well-developed plot with several completely unpredictable twists and turns; the book kept me riveted from start to finish. I found it easy to relate to the fully developed characters because of their authenticity. As a native Mississippian, I am often wary of how Southerners are stereotyped in literature, but I needn't have worried. This author respectfully took me back home, painting a picture of the rural South that is unblinkingly genuine. Modern societal struggles are readily evident, as is the power of familial bonds. Love and discrimination exist side by side in the story of a family who, after years of trying to live in peace as the "freaks" of their county, finally, reluctantly have to confront bigotry head on. The South is a complex place, and this author embraces those complexities rather than trying to shy away from them.

The setting is vivid and real (I could feel myself on the front porch and at the fruit stand), and the tone was absolutely, beautifully right. The book has just the right amount of humor and suspense. This writer has an authentic Southern voice with just enough sarcasm and wit to balance the honeysuckle and wisteria.

I love how this novel mingles fantasy with reality so seamlessly. The magic becomes a natural part of the book, as believable as the busybody waitress or the description of the old truck with the broken air conditioner. You know how after reading Anne Rice you start looking around for vampires, or after reading J.K. Rowling you wonder if some among you really may carry wands in their pockets? After reading Blackbird Summer, you'll believe in magic. You'll never see people with green eyes in the same way again.

This is a promising debut novel. I can't wait to read more by Em Shotwell.
I finished this book in less than 48 hours - ignoring my children and other responsibilities because I could not put it down! This book is so gripping, that it will not let you go once you've started it. It not only paints a really vivid, believable picture of a fascinating world, it also really makes you care about each and every one of these unique, very real characters. There is seriously not a single character in this book that isn't complex - the relationships are not just easy, shallow relationships, but are real and have all the ups and downs of real life. The plot took me by surprise, and had my heart racing and my eyes tearing up. It was awesome, I highly recommend it.
After reading prequel/teaser short story "The Chans," I was intrigued by the seemingly ordinary characters, who turn out to have some pretty extraordinary abilities, hiding in plain sight in a Southern small town. Some of my favorite tales unfold in the deep South, so kudos for the setting! Naturally I grabbed a copy of "Blackbird Summer." I'm sooooo glad I did!

The Caibre family, including heroine Tallulah, are the oddball misfits in their rural Mississippi town. Not that it stops townsfolk from darkening their doors at night for spells, but in the light of day they remain the town pariahs. With an arranged marriage looming on the horizon, Talullah is faced with an all-too-relatable dilemma. Do what's expected of her to please her family, or follow her dreams by seeking her own path and risk alienation from her kin and kind. Meeting intriguing stranger Logan (no spoilers, but let's just say he knows a thing or two about being "different") doesn't help, nor does a brutal attack on her sister that puts her family in jeopardy. Can Talullah find true (if forbidden) love and save her family from the dark threats against them?

You'll have to grab your own copy to find out! Highly recommend!
